The power plant makes use of a height of fall of 735 metres from the nearby Hardangervidda plateau. Establishment of the plant led to the development of the waterfalls Ringedalsfossen and Tyssestrengene with their 300 metres of free fall.

The tunnel that transfers operating water to Tysso II goes around Lake Ringedalsvannet, which is located at about 1,150 metres above sea level. The tunnel is over 15 km long and has a cross section of between 16 and 18 square metres.

The power plant was commissioned in 1967 and is a partially submerged plant, i.e. part of it is located at a level below the outlet. The power plant has two Pelton turbines, each producing 110 MW. The power plant discharges into Lake Ringedalsvannet, which is the reservoir for Oksla power plant.
